LARGE INTESTINE
The large intestine is the last part of the digestive system. It’s function is to absorb water from the remaining indigestible food matter, and then to pass useless waste material from the body (feces, stools or bowel movements). The large intestine consists of the cecum and colon. It starts in the right lower abdomen in the area of the appendix and travels up the right side of the abdomen, where it make a right angle turn under the liver and travels transversely across the abdomen. It makes another right angle turn in the area of the Spleen and travels down the left side of the abdomen. In the area of the left pelvis, the large intestine makes an S-shaped series of turns (Sigmoid Colon) and then straightens out to become the rectum and the anus. The large intestine is about 1.5 meters (4.9 ft) long, which is about one-fifth of the whole length of the gastrointestinal tract.
